Community Mental Health Centres
CMHA (Canadian Mental Health Association) operates in every province. They offer free or low-cost counselling, crisis support, peer support, and wellness programs. Many have newcomer-specific programs and multilingual staff. Find your local CMHA at cmha.ca.

Many settlement agencies (ACCES Employment, MOSAIC BC, ISANS NS, CCS Ontario) include mental health counselling in their services — specifically for newcomers and refugees. These are free and culturally sensitive. Check your local agencies.

If you're employed, check if your employer offers an EAP. EAPs provide free confidential counselling sessions (typically 3–6 per year) — often $0 cost for you. Access through HR or your employee benefits portal. Some EAPs offer 24/7 phone support.
If You Are a Student
Post-secondary students in Canada have access to free mental health services through their school. Most colleges and universities have counselling centres with licensed therapists. Many also offer same-day crisis appointments. Contact your school's Student Services or Student Wellness centre.
Newcomer-Specific Challenges & Support
Cultural Identity & Belonging
Feeling like you don't belong is extremely common for newcomers. It's called "cultural adjustment" and it's a real, documented psychological experience. Connecting with others from your home country through cultural associations can significantly help. Settlely Community can connect you with people in your cohort.
Find culturally sensitive supportImmigrant Depression & Anxiety
Studies show 33–50% of immigrants experience significant depression in their first 2 years. Causes include isolation, job searching stress, language barriers, family separation, and financial pressure. These feelings are valid and treatable. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Family Stress & Relationships
Immigration can strain marriages and family relationships. Couples and families face new roles, financial stress, and cultural adjustments together. Many CMHA branches offer family counselling. Culturally specific counselling is available — ask your settlement agency for referrals.

Mindfulness & Meditation
Headspace offers a free subscription for 1 year for anyone who has experienced stress or anxiety (check headspace.com/stress). Calm and Insight Timer are also excellent free apps. Even 5–10 minutes of daily meditation has strong clinical evidence for reducing anxiety.
Try HeadspacePhysical Activity for Mental Health
Exercise is one of the most evidence-backed treatments for mild-to-moderate depression and anxiety. Walking, running, or cycling outside for 30 minutes, 3x/week can significantly improve mood. Canada's many parks, trails, and recreation centres are free or low-cost.
Online Communities & Peer Support
Reddit communities like r/ImmigrantCanada and r/NewToCanada are active newcomer communities. Many cities have WhatsApp or Facebook groups for newcomers from specific countries. Social connection is one of the biggest protective factors for mental health.
